The Kiva Connection endeavors to be a part of places, groups of people, and events that empower individuals; and support spiritual growth, emotional health and pro-active living.
Residents of New York's Southern Tier area have indicated a strong need for activities and programs for women in general - most especially those in crisis - that will stimulate their minds, utilize their creativity, and build their self-esteem. Programs that give them a place to go, activities to do, and provide a support system for the development and realization of their dreams are believed to be beneficial.
Men are looking for activities to further their knowledge in the area of problem solving skills, such as how to make what they do have support their lives, their families and their goals in a time and place where jobs are hard to find, businesses are leaving the area and farms are struggling to survive. People today, especially those local to the Southern Tier, are interested in acquiring new, specialized labor skills, such as learning to build with natural materials, so that they might further support the maintenance of the natural beauty and simplicity of life this area is recognized for.
They are also stating a desire for a place for personal reflection, quiet and solitude, and love the idea of Kiva Connections with tents or little primitive shelters and cabins tucked away in the woods. When asked if writing workshops, music/jam sessions and/or gatherings of those seeking help with coping skills in times of great stress and family conflict would be appreciated and attended, the answer given is "yes". The local community has further expressed a desire to see "programs for kids" established that will hold their interest, enhance their potential and put them on a positive path. The Kiva Connection is working to provide these opportunities.
